Michael McNeill::Teaching

On-line lessons are available. In-person lessons in the Buffalo, NY area are also available, at Community Music School (mention my name when signing up), in Orchard Park, and elsewhere by arrangement.

My students have ranged in age from five to over eighty, and from beginners to music graduate students. Lessons are tailored to the level and desires of the student and are aimed at helping the student to become a better overall musician.

From Fall 2019 through Spring 2023 I taught music in various capacities at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA. In my time in Virginia I also taught at Christchurch School (2016-23), and was music director at Grace Episcopal Church (2020-23) and Urbanna United Methodist Church (2016-2020).

From Fall 2012 through Spring 2015 I taught piano lessons, ensembles (Mixed Chamber Ensemble and Hip Hop), Composition Seminar, Jazz Aural Skills, and Western ("Classical") Music History at Villa Maria College. I also taught and accompanied at the Community Music School of Buffalo from 2013-2015.

I hold Bachelor and Master of Music degrees, and have taught regularly since 2003. I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Music Theory in 2004 from Nazareth College of Rochester, where my principal teachers included Beverly Smoker (classical piano) and Paul Smoker (jazz piano and composition), as well as composition professors Tim Sullivan, Jing Jing Luo, and Carl Wiens. I received my Master of Music degree in Modern American Music in 2007 from the Longy School of Music (Cambridge, MA), where my principal teachers included Charlie Banacos (jazz piano), George Garzone (jazz piano), and Randall Hodgkinson (classical piano).
